Alphabet by Michael Craig-Martin

[Posted on 1.1.2012 - by ragm@rugby.gov.uk]

New exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum; 14th January - 17th March 2012

Michael Craig-Martin is one of the most influential British artists of recent decades. He was a key figure for the YBA generation of artists, many of whom he taught in his capacity as Professor at Goldsmiths College of Art. In Alphabet he has produced 26 screenprints in which the letters of the alphabet are overlaid with everyday objects such as a book, a glass of water or an umbrella.

Throughout his career, Craig-Martin has explored the iconography of everyday and designer objects. In alphabet, visually arresting images are set against a background of vivid monochrome colours and overlaid with a single letter. In this series, created in his signature style, Craig-Martin plays with the idea of the ABC children's primer. Instead of a direct 'A is for Apple', 'B is for Ball', the relationship between the letter and the image is more ambiguous and requires some guesswork; 'C' shows a knife, perhaps representing the word 'cut'. This series of 26 screen prints was published by the Alan Cristea Gallery in 2007.

Rugby Art Gallery and Museum is open Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm / Saturday 10am - 4pm.

eye 2 i, i 2 eye

[Posted on 1.1.2012 - by ragm@rugby.gov.uk]

New exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum; 14th January - 17th March 2012

The eye 2 i, i 2 eye project was set up as a collaboration between Rugby Writers and Rugby Artists' Group. The project involves writers and visual artists loaning work to each other in order to inspire new pieces of work to be made. Each artist has loaned an art work to a writer and each writer has loaned a piece of writing to an artist. The resulting exhibition will contain all of the original loaned work alongside the new pieces created in response. The exhibition promises to be an intriguing mix of writing and art works in a variety of mediums highlighting the wealth of writing and art that is produced within the borough of Rugby.

Rugby Writers: this group meet twice a month to discuss and review each other's work which includes fiction and non-fiction, poetry, songs and play scripts. Some members have had work published and several have achieved success in writing competitions. The group take opportunities to read their work in public and every year publishes an anthology of their writing.

Rugby Artists' Group: Founded in 2003 as the Rugby Artists' Support Group, Rugby Artists' Group provides networking, support, exhibition and development opportunities for artists based in the Rugby Borough. The group organises and leads Artlab which is a monthly experimental art activity for adults. Members of the group often work co-operatively with other local art groups and participate in events such as the regional Warwickshire Open Studios Week.

Rugby Art Gallery and Museum is open Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm / Saturday 10am - 4pm

The Mobility Project

[Posted on 4.1.2012 - by mail@clarkegallery.de]

The Mobility Project
Curated by Elly Clarke/Clarke Gallery

Exhibition: 19th January – 19th February 2012
Open: Friday – Sunday, 1-5pm
PV: Thursday 19th January 2012, 6-9pm
Panel Discussion: 21st January 2012, 2-5pm

With work by Simon Clark, Elly Clarke, Enda O’Donoghue, Kerstin Honeit, Rebecca Pittman, plan b/Sophia New & Dan Belasco Rogers, Fedora Romita and Kym Ward and special appearance by Alfredo Cramerotti at the Panel Discussion.

Clarke Gallery is delighted and honoured to have been invited to present The Mobility Project at The Meter Room. This is the second stop of this exhibition, which began in Berlin and consists of work by artists mostly based in Berlin. But as the exhibition travels, it picks up other work by local artists and invites local speakers to talk at the panel discussion.

We are very grateful for the support of Arts Council England, Coventry Council and Culture Ireland - without which this exhibition could not have happened. All artists are travelling from their home towns for this show.

“Keep connected, you are never alone, never alone with a mobile phone in your pocket.”[1]

Over the last decade, particularly since the mass take-up of the mobile phone, the ever-increasing mobility - of people, goods, information and images - has radically altered the way we perceive, interpret, navigate and even describe the world. Notions of presence and absence, solitude and togetherness and even of geography are changing, as our personally tailored collections of contacts, communities, photos and politics are with us 24/7. The way we travel around the places we live in, and how we interact with others whilst we’re there has a great impact on the way we understand not only where we are but also who we are. Communication and movement are, and always have been, closely linked, dictating the scope of our influence. But today, in a world where one tweeted photo can be seen across five continents within seconds, that influence can reach areas and cultures of which we have no concept.

Here, seven projects present seven different projections of mobility. From Simon Clark’s epic cycle journey around the UK delivering postcards he picked up from the Galapagos Islands direct into people’s hands to plan b’s live redrawing of their GPS traces gathered over their past year in Berlin direct onto the gallery wall; from Enda O’Donoghue paintings created from low-res mobile phone photos found on the internet to Kerstin Honeit’s multi-city performance-experiments where she instructs women to stand on the same area of pavement for fifteen minutes - and finally from Fedora Romita’s audio recordings of the U-Bahn network of Berlin as a means of getting to know the city she just moved to, to Rebecca Pittman’s two screen video installation of her journey along a featureless road in the states listening to driving music and finally also my own five minute video showing an unexpected moment of stillness on the German Autobahn - these are personal portraits of navigation. But, between them, they touch on wider issues that affect us all as we negotiate our way around the world - including gender, power, surveillance and the relationship between physical and virtual materiality.

All work in this exhibition is for sale. There is also a specially commissioned set of prints, the sales of which will help fund this exhibition’s onward journey. Please enquire for a price list.

On 21st January at 2pm a panel discussion will take place in the gallery, featuring most of the artists in the show plus some invited guest speakers.

Elly Clarke is an artist & curator based in Berlin and Birmingham, UK.

Clarke Gallery was set up by Elly Clarke in 2008 in 2 room apartment in Neukoelln, Berlin. Following ten exhibitions that took place there, Clarke Gallery escaped – as exhibitions in suitcases and by inhabint other people’s spaces. Over the past 18 months, Clarke Gallery shows have travelled to Eastern Edge Gallery in St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada; Franklin Furnace in New York and TROVE in Birmingham - with plans for more to come. Please sign up to the Clarke Gallery mailing list to find out about an exhibition coming to a place near you, soon. www.clarkegallery.de / mail@clarkegallery.de. Or join the group on Facebook.

Through The Pinhole 7th-18th Feb Floor One Gallery Rugby Art Gallery & Museum
A Photographic Exploration of Other Realities by Shiam Wilcox
‘Through The Pinhole’ is a culmination of works by Artist Shiam Wilcox using Pinhole Photography over the past year. Shiam Wilcox uses a variety of cameras, most handmade and specifically to fit the subject that she is photographing. The camera produces strange distortions in the image because of the wide angle and even reveals hidden elements that cannot be seen by the human eye, due to the extremely long exposures.
‘Through The Pinhole’ captures a world that appears to exist in another timescale, where slow time rules and would otherwise remain hidden from our fast time eyes.

Rita Gabrowska - Shapes That Can Eat You

[Posted on 1.2.2012 - by brinkevents@gmail.com]

A fascinating exhibition of works, where familiar symbols, objects and forms are merged to create imaginary and dreamlike 'mindscapes'.

From 1st February until 31st March 2012, BRINK will be presenting the works of Rita Gabrowska at Kenilworth Wines.

Gabrowska, who was born in Wroclaw, Poland, currently lives and works in Leamington Spa as a graphic designer, painter, digital artist, photographer and jewellery designer.

As well as exhibiting in the UK, Poland and Italy, this talented and multi-faceted artist has five digital art works in the collection of the Dolnoslaskie Towarzystwo Zachety Sztuk Pieknych art institute.

Reminiscent of the Suprematist movement, her works are sometimes self-referential or inspired by mass media symbolism, such as road signs, electronic components and man-made objects. The images emerge as ‘mindscapes’, where everyday objects are extrapolated from reality and reinterpreted in a new, autonomic world, composed of captivating colours and abstract forms.

Since 2011, the artists has been focusing on digital compositions, with a strikingly modern yet Daliesque quality. In these works Gabrowska explores her fascination for geometric and organic abstract forms and their relationships to each other.

“Traditional painting was always the main discipline in my carrier. I was taking photos, drawing and occasionally making digital compositions based on these studies, but I always painted on canvas, developing a world of abstract forms observed in reality. However, a few months ago this began to change”, states the artists. “Since I started working at Codemasters, I began to observe digital art more and more and became fascinated with the countless possibilities that the 2-D realm can offer an artist. Digital media opened up an amazing space in which to challenge my imagination and discover and create new worlds. No longer confined to the use of real and fragile materials, such as paper, canvas, paints etc., the creative possibilities become endless. The ‘digital paintings’ in the Vino Veritas Showcase are the first in a new series of works that portray surreal spaces, where the strange forms and creatures that exist in my subconscious can materialise and come to life. I could not incorporate these into my works on canvas; there was no space for them on the strict, analytical surfaces of the geometrical forms, which I will never stop painting, but I am very pleased to have found a new way to express and expand my creativity.”

The BRINK showcase can be viewed at Kenilworth Wines Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-7pm.

BRINK has an on-going call for artists who are interested in exhibiting and promoting their work in the local area. For further information visit: www.wix.com/brinkevents/home
